What is the Kunbi Caste? What is Its History?
Friends, the Kunbi caste simply means the farming community or farmer caste. The farming community in Maharashtra is known as Kunbis. The word ‘Kunbi’ is derived from the words ‘Kun’ and ‘Beej.’ ‘Kun’ means people, and ‘Beej’ means seed, indicating people who produce multiple seeds, i.e., farmers. Originally, Kunbis resided in the western-southern parts of India, including Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, and Karnataka. As the Maratha Empire expanded, they spread across India and became known as Marathas.
After completing their farming work, these Kunbi warriors would head off to battle. Even during the time of Kulvadi Bhushan Shivaji Maharaj, the Maratha army comprised part-time warriors. Once they gained power, these Kunbis were later known as Marathas.
Are Marathas and Kunbis the Same?
Friends, in earlier times, the farming community was referred to as Kunbis. Similarly, Marathas in Maharashtra were also involved in farming. Therefore, most Marathas were essentially Kunbis, i.e., farmers. Thus, it can be accepted that all Marathas are essentially Maratha Kunbis. British administrative officer Robert Vane Russell, in his book “The Tribes and Castes of the Central Provinces of India,” also stated that the Kunbi community is essentially Marathas. In reality, Marathas and Kunbis are not two distinct castes but the same. In the 1881 census, Marathas were included under Kunbis, meaning that in 1881, all Marathas were considered Kunbis.
